Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin were named the respective Male and Female Athletes of the Year at last night's Golden Goggle Awards. The event, held in New York City, were hosted by NBC's Bob Costas.
Phelps also won the Male Performance of the Year (100 Fly win in Beijing) and the Relay Performance of the Year (400 Free Relay, come-from-behind win). Jason Lezak swam the anchor leg of that amazing race.
Eric Shanteau won the Perseverance Award for pushing through after his cancer diagnosis. The Breakout Performer of the Year Award and Female Performance of the Year awards went to Rebecca Soni, who shattered the 200 Breast World Record in a thrilling race with former record-holder Leisel Jones.
Once again, Bob Bowman was honored as Coach of the Year. The Athlete Humanitarian Award went to Cullen Jones for his efforts to promote diversity in the sport. (Click here to learn more about his efforts)
Megan Romano competed in her final Florida State High School Championship meet, and finished with 2 more individual titles; in the 100 Back and 200 Free.
Megan was shooting for some record-setting swims, but came up a little short on those goals. In the 200 Free, she stopped the clock at 1:46.06, just .17 off the record. Meanwhile, in the 100 Back, her 54.12, was .28 short of the state mark. Still, extremely impressive times that were also served as career bests.
On the relay front, Megan and her Northeast teammates combined for a 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley relay with a 1:51.79 finish.
The Minnesota stop is the first of USA Swimming's 2008-09 Grand Prix circuit which will then continue to Long Beach (CA), Columbia (MO), Austin (TX), Charlotte (NC), and Santa Clara (CA) next year.
The meet will be contested in short course yards and runs Friday through Sunday.
Ryan's events include the 100 Breast, 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Back, 200 Back, and 100 Free. Mary Descenza, Allison Schmitt, and Chloe Sutton are other National Teamers expected to compete.
Saturday, Megan will swim in her final Florida High School State Championship meet. Her events are the 200 Free and 100 Back. The meet is being held in Orlando at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center.
